Meditating on the Bible
A Worked Example
1 Peter 2:24 – “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.”
1. Pray for God’s leading and guiding of your meditation and that not only would you be informed by what you learn, but also transformed more into Christ’s likeness. Pray through the answer to each question
2. Focus on the Passage at hand. Fill your mind with its words and memorise it. Do not give into distracting thoughts.
[A] Meditation on Meaning
1. Read the verse in its context. What is the context of the verse?
2. What does this verse tell us about God?
3. What does this verse tell us about Christ?
4. What does this verse tell us about the way of Salvation?
5. What does this verse tell us about ourselves and our duty to God?
[B] Meditation on Application
1. Does this text point to some aspect of God I haven’t figured on before and which comforts me?
2. Does this text point to some area of my life in which I am falling short?
3. Does this text afford me guidance about my next step in life?
4. Does this text help me to explain Christianity to my non-Christian friends better?
5. Does this text give me comfort in a particular predicament I am facing?
6. Is there any other way in which this text speaks into my situation?
