God is passionate about families. They are His basic blueprint for the flourishing of Christian society. Take away the Christian family and you take away the foundation of civilized society and soon it descends into chaos. No wonder the devil takes as his top priority the destruction of Christian families, for in doing so, he can both destroy Christian societies and spite God in the process. But 2,000 years ago, the Lord Jesus Christ lived, died and was raised from the dead to put an end to the devil’s dominance over human societies. His coming signalled the end of the time of Satan and ushered in the Kingdom of Light. His coming made it possible for us to live as God designed us to – as functioning and loving members of families. Read the rest of this entry »

Read: 1 Chronicles 3
Kenny MacDonald, the former minister of Rosskeen, has a memorable phrase, borne and coined out of his own experience in seeing the Lord working through his ministry in the North. His phrase is ‘God Works in Families‘. He saw many parents coming to faith through the witness of their children; he saw many wives becoming Christians through the witness of their recently converted husbands, and vice versa. Our great covenant God, works in Families. Read the rest of this entry »

Read: Genesis 3:1-24
I read in a newspaper yesterday, that getting married in a church is still the most popular place to tie the knot. 60% of couples, and the number is rising, choose to marry in a church. They want to start their marriage off on a good footing; perhaps getting God’s blessing and doing things right from the very beginning. Everything goes perfect on the big day, but unless they aren’t human, the problems and arguments then begin. What starts off as a perfect marriage in a perfect place so often ends up as a sticky divorce in a law court. Why does this happen? Last week we saw that God created the family and His benediction over it is “it is very good”. So how come God’s perfect family life, as revealed in Genesis 1 and 2, now keeps countless divorce lawyers in Ferrari’s? The answer is in Genesis 3 and 4 and it is in a word “sin”. Sin breaks and ruins the family – just like the first sin broke the first family. So what I want to do today is to survey just how great the impact of sin is upon the family – I want to trace first of all how sin came into the family, and then I want to look at how sin has broken the family: Read the rest of this entry »

Genesis 1:26 – 2:3
Last week, I happened to be speaking to someone who works for an organisation called ‘Campus Crusade for Christ’. She is an older Dutch lady and she and her husband have spent many years talking at Christian conferences on the topic of Christian marriage. We spoke for some time and I learned a lot – but perhaps the most alarming thing I heard was that in Holland, as I suspect in Britain too, the Satanist Church has, as its number one priority, the breakdown of Christian marriages. And so the Satanists pray fervently to their master that he would break up Christian husbands and wives. Unfortunately, we only see too well how many Christian marriages are breaking up – according to one American report, Christian marriages are just as likely as non-Christian marriages to end in divorce.
